Clean, safe neighborhoods with large lots are the norm in Frontenac. Many of the buildings, both residential and commercial, share that original charm that the city’s founders first fell in love with.

Frontenac takes its name from Louis de Buade, Count of Frontenac, a French courtier and Governor of New France. Louis de Buade established a number of forts on the Great Lakes, including Fort Frontenac, in what is now part of Ontario. Over a century later, Mr. And Mrs. Benjamin Wood, owners of what is now the central region of the City, visited this region and were charmed by the history and architecture they found there. They decided to name their property after the region.

The land owned by the Woods eventually sold off and turned into subdivisions, with Frontenac becoming a city in 1950.

Frontenac is just off Interstate 64/40, making it a quick drive into the city or out to points further west. Lindberg Blvd/Kirkwood Blvd runs North and South through the commercial part of the city, linking Frontenac with other downtown areas.

Those that like the feel of history might want to check out the old Des Peres Presbyterian Church and Cemetery and the Van Dyke home. There are also several other places of historical interest in neighboring areas.

Frontenac has some of the areas nicest shopping areas, including Plaza Frontenac, Old Frontenac Square, and Le Chateau Village. A wide variety of specialty shops and fine restaurants are located in these areas.

Frontenac is served by two of the best school districts in the area, Ladue and Kirkwood. Villa Duchesne/Oak Hill School is a popular private school, serving boys and girls grades JK-6 and young women grades 7-12. Chaminade College Preparatory School is a private all-boys middle and high school, and St. Joseph's Academy, an all-girls high school—both highly regarded.

The Old Des Peres Presbyterian Church and Cemetery (referred to as the Old Meeting House), was built in 1832 and is the first of its kind west of the Mississippi. Located on Geyer Road, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

The Van Dyke home on Oak Valley Drive was built in 1854, and the Drum home on Spoede Road near Clayton, was built in 1860.
